Title: Mayor
Company:
City of Garfield Heights
Location:
Garfield Heights, Ohio, United States

Mayor Matt Burke, Mayor of the City of Garfield Heights, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements and leadership in Public Service and Local Governance.

With a distinguished career spanning nearly a decade in municipal government and more than three decades in business management, Mr. Burke has demonstrated a steadfast commitment to his community. Since 2021, he has served as the mayor of Garfield Heights, representing a city of close to 30,000 residents. His election to this role stands as a professional milestone that he regards with immense pride.

As mayor, Mr. Burke is particularly proud not only of his leadership but also of the opportunity to serve during a period of significant demographic and cultural transformation. He was inspired to pursue this path by witnessing the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which highlighted deepening generational and cultural divides within the city. Drawing from his experience studying generational differences in his prior business roles, Mr. Burke recognized the need for leadership capable of uniting diverse communities and guiding Garfield Heights through change.

Mr. Burke’s journey into public office began after years in the private sector and military service. Before assuming mayoral duties, he was the president of the city council for Garfield Heights from 2017 to 2018. He initially joined the council around 2012 and served two terms as a councilman before being elected president by his peers. These experiences provided Mr. Burke with critical insights into city operations and budgeting, laying the groundwork for his current role.

Before his tenure in government, Mr. Burke built an extensive career in the floor covering industry. From 2019 to 2021, he was a territory manager at Mohawk Industries, where he leveraged his expertise in sales and client relations across Ohio. For over 15 years, from 2002 to 2019, he held a similar position at Ohio Valley Flooring, honing his skills in business development and customer engagement. Earlier roles included territory manager at H.J. Weber Co. between 1997 and 2001, following Mr. Burke’s initial role as a sales manager at Colortile Inc. from 1986 to 1995. These positions allowed him to develop strong networking abilities and leadership qualities that would later prove invaluable in public service.

Mr. Burke’s professional journey also included military service with the U.S. Army Reserve from 1988 to 1996. His time in the armed forces instilled discipline and taught him essential lessons about leadership and teamwork, qualities that continue to inform his approach as an elected official.

After graduating from Garfield Heights High School in 1988, Mr. Burke completed coursework in business, management, marketing and related support services at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio. He also received certification in multimedia management and as a webmaster from Cuyahoga Valley Career Center. While he expresses regret over not pursuing higher education after joining the military at age 18, a decision influenced by limited opportunities and personal circumstances, Mr. Burke has garnered real-life, practical education that has significantly shaped both his professional trajectory and leadership style.

In addition to his primary obligations as mayor, Mr. Burke is a dedicated member of the Cuyahoga County Planning Commission. His involvement extends into volunteer work with various nonprofit organizations, reflecting a broader commitment to civic engagement.

Throughout his career, Mr. Burke has distinguished himself as a public servant rather than a traditional politician. He emphasizes servant leadership by actively participating in tasks alongside city employees, such as picking up trash. His ability to connect with people of all ages is evident through initiatives like the Effective Leadership Academy and through ongoing engagement with adolescents and seniors alike.

Mentorship has played a significant role in Mr. Burke’s development. He credits relationships with former mayors for shaping his understanding of community stewardship and economic recovery efforts in Garfield Heights. These connections have reinforced his belief in collaborative governance and community-driven progress. Mr. Burke attributes much of his success to openness and active listening. He avoids partisan politics despite being a registered Democrat in a predominantly Republican state, focusing instead on bipartisan cooperation for the benefit of residents.

Networking remains central to Mr. Burke’s approach. He values building relationships with mayors, county leaders and council members across political lines, which has enabled him to secure grant funding and foster respect among peers. Looking ahead, he plans to pursue further studies in urban planning at the community college level, an endeavor that underscores his ongoing commitment to effective governance and thoughtful city development.
