Scott Bockelman, independent contractor, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in technology.
With over three decades of experience, Mr. Bockelman has established a successful career in technology, specializing in software development. Since 2023, he has worked as an independent contractor, focusing on open-source software projects. He is actively engaged in developing open-source initiatives, consulting with startup founders, and collaborating with his son to create a video game. His experience also includes serving as director of software development at Oracle from 2012 to 2023, where he previously held the role of senior manager of software development from 2012 to 2015. Additionally, he was a senior software architect at ClearTrial, now part of Oracle, from 2006 to 2012, working with Cobite from 2003 to 2006, software consultant and application developer at Entology, now PwC, from 2001 to 2003, and department manager of solutions development at Vertek from 1997 to 2001. Laying a strong educational foundation, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English literature from Indiana University Bloomington in 1991.
Reflecting on his path, Mr. Bockelman has always been drawn to problem-solving, appreciating the creativity inherent in software design. He enjoys building mental models of complex problems and crafting software solutions to address them, a process that led him to pursue a career in technology. One of his most significant achievements was developing an application that uses predictive analytics to estimate the time and costs associated with clinical trials. A key challenge arose when larger clients, including companies with in-house biostatisticians, requested the ability to substitute proprietary algorithms into the software. Working alongside his team, he successfully delivered a solution that met these needs. This application was instrumental in planning the clinical trials for the COVID-19 vaccine, with both Pfizer and Moderna utilizing it. Moderna, in particular, collaborated closely to plan their trials, while other Oracle products facilitated their execution.
Additionally, Mr. Bockelman takes pride in the software he helped develop 18 years ago, which remains effective and valuable in the industry today. His contributions to the field have been recognized through a patent he holds for a framework modeling a clinical trial study using a crossover treatment design, granted in 2019. He attributes his success to the practice of active listening, emphasizing the importance of fully understanding a problem before formulating a response. He prioritizes the perspectives of customers, clients, and colleagues, ensuring thoughtful and well-informed solutions. A proponent of continual learning, he embraces new experiences and unconventional approaches, always maintaining an open mind. His dedication to professional growth is paired with a strong desire to help others navigate their own challenges. In the coming years, he aims to contribute to the developer community by pursuing part-time teaching, tutoring, and instructional roles.
Recognizing the overwhelming nature of the early stages of a developer’s journey, he plans to share his insights, particularly in distinguishing between fleeting trends and enduring fundamental principles. In advising aspiring professionals, he emphasizes the importance of lifelong learning, noting that no one ever knows everything, especially in the vast field of computer software. He believes valuable insights can come from anyone, whether they have two years or 30 years of experience, as individuals bring unique perspectives and ideas. He advocates treating everyone as a mentor and remaining open to learning from all interactions, as good ideas can emerge from unexpected sources.
