Mr. Thorsen, a leader in occupational safety, has enjoyed a career spanning more than four decades, earning a reputation for excellence in training and leadership. Since 2013, he has served as the regional compliance safety supervisor for Maryland Occupational Safety and Health (MOSH) in Hunt Valley, where he manages a region within the state, oversees case reviews, assigns workloads, and ensures the accuracy of all write-ups and citations issued. In this capacity, Mr. Thorsen is responsible for providing comprehensive training to his team and new hires, as well as managing over five inspectors. His commitment to education and mentorship is widely recognized, with many professionals in the safety field citing his training and speaking engagements as pivotal to their own development.
Before his current role, Mr. Thorsen served as the regional compliance, safety and health specialist and assistant supervisor at MOSH from 1999 to 2013. During this period, he played a key role in advancing workplace safety standards, supporting compliance initiatives, and fostering his colleagues’ professional growth through targeted instruction and guidance.
Mr. Thorsen began his career as a radiation safety technician in 1982, focusing on nuclear power industry radiation safety. Over two decades, he traveled to approximately 20 nuclear plants across the United States, participating in various outages and projects that deepened his expertise in hazard mitigation and regulatory compliance.
Beyond his contributions to occupational safety, Mr. Thorsen served as the varsity baseball coach at Bel Air High School in Bel Air, Maryland, from 2001 to 2019. Under his leadership, the team achieved significant milestones, including winning the Maryland State High School Baseball Championship in 2013 and 2016.
Mr. Thorsen’s educational background included college coursework that provided foundational knowledge for his career in safety management. He also holds the construction, health and safety technician certification from the American Society of Safety Professionals, underscoring his commitment to maintaining high standards within the industry.
Active professionally, Mr. Thorsen is a member of the American Society of Safety Professionals and serves on the Chesapeake Region Safety Council’s safety conference board. He has also been an active guest speaker at conferences and has delivered keynote addresses on topics such as trench excavations, training methodologies and best practices in workplace safety. Mr. Thorsen’s expertise in these areas is widely respected, reflecting both his technical knowledge and his ability to communicate complex concepts effectively.
Mr. Thorsen’s civic involvement has included serving as the vice president and board member of the Emmorton Recreation Council in Bel Air. The nonprofit organization provides recreational and creative activities to all community residents.
Attributing his success to a lifelong willingness to learn and a genuine passion for sharing knowledge with others, Mr. Thorsen values the information inherent in occupational safety work and takes pride in helping others stay safe through education and mentorship.
